Before arriving at William Peace University, Kayleigh Griffith-Teemer was sold on the university’s clubs and organizations.
During her visit, Griffith-Teemer learned about all the different clubs and was told that if there wasn’t a space where she felt comfortable, she had the green light to create one.
Luckily for Griffith-Teemer, the perfect club was already on campus.
Griffith-Teemer joined the Black Student Union as a sophomore.
The Black Student Union is a relatively new club at Peace, established in 2017. BSU currently has around 35 members and meets bi-weekly under the supervision of faculty advisor Anthony Holloman.
TJ Hill-Johnson joined in 2022 and became president in the spring of 2023.
“It (BSU) was one of the driving points of the university for me,” Hill-Johnson said. “Having an affinity group based around an identity that means so much to me that I live every day. The numbers are small, but we have a mighty, dedicated group, and I think that’s why we’ve been so persistent and present.”
New members are asked to attend three meetings and two events. Some events include game tournaments, Jeopardy-style meetings, movie nights, and cookouts.
