SUPPORTING
STUDENTS

A student coalition that strives to research, analyze and report on the basic needs and insecurities their colleagues are facing on their respective campuses.

About Us

Students are hired, trained and equipped with the knowledge of basic needs insecurities, and the work it will take to address these issues. Those who have experienced food and housing insecurity first-hand work passionately towards a community that meets the basic needs of students so they can focus on their work and success as a student and a professional.

National research showed that 3 in 5 college students experience basic need insecurities; 44% of students were food insecure at 2- year institutions, and 38% at 4-year institutions. Over 11% of students reported experiencing homelessness.

North Carolina State University conducted a local basic needs survey in 2017, noting the prevalence of food and housing insecurity before the pandemic hit the collegiate community. Despite a flood of basic needs resources available to students from 2020 to the present, our students continue to face basic needs insecurity at disconcerting rates.

Hi, I’m Claire Docton. I am a junior at Meredith College majoring in Business Administration.

I am extremely passionate about leaving everywhere I go better than how I found it, and Students Supporting Students follows those values the same way I do.

I look forward to what this year will bring and to learning more ways to assist students in need!

Hi, my name is Kim Kristin Lueder. As an international student at Meredith College in Raleigh, originally from Hamburg, Germany, I’m pursuing a major in political science with a pre-law concentration and a focus on international studies.

Being part of the S3 (Students Supporting Students) Ambassador program is an incredible experience that allows me to connect with and support my peers. Growing up as a middle child, I’ve always looked up to my older brother while taking pride in mentoring my younger sister, which has inspired me to strive for more.

My experiences abroad have provided me with a unique global perspective that enriches my studies and interactions within the diverse community at Meredith.
